Not to get too philosophical, but when you get right down to it, all shooter games are really just cursor-placing and mouse-clicking competitions. It's just that the shapes of the targets change. It sort of makes the distinction between COD2 and COD4 kind of funny.
Okay, now go ahead and tease me about how useless and strange that is. A lot of you are often quite funny.

LOL
I'll be first up, I guess.
Essentially yeah, that is was FPS's are. Only thing that changes it up is tactics, really. I thinks its much like shooting a weapon IRL. Any idiot (or unfortunately sometimes very young children) can shoot a fire arm. However, if someone with honed skill and tactical knowledge uses one for a situation, than its even more than deadly. In the use of CoD2 vs CoD4: CoD2 is about as basic as CSS, CoD4 has added features for tactical use and more bells-n-whistles essentially aswell. CoD4 has things to cater to those who dont like the run-of-the-mill "run n' gun". CoD2 has sniping etc, but doesnt have the extras that can be used to make sniping tactics more efficient. With all FPSs, I think something that has become popular and really making particular games out-sell their competition is being able to customize for the individuals play style. Now with many of the new (and sometimes better) FPSs coming out, you can customize your weapons, gear, etc to work more efficiently/beneficially to that individuals playing style/tactics.
As far as choosing one game over the other for my own personal play time.... It lands on fun. I miss CoD4, but cant run it on the laptop. I can run CSS, but unfortunately the internet here in this lil town is horrible. So crappy slow, spikey inturdznetz doesnt make for great FPS action...more like great FPS frustration. Only at certain times in the late evening can I play decently. Thats why I've been playing more WoW (World of Warcraft). I dont need a great internet connection (tho if you want to be good, it helps alot. Like other games). Plus I like hacking, slashing, spell-casting on some mofuqaz in PVP (player versus player).
When chosing an FPS, I like to look at stuff in this order: 1- gfx (the user interface, hud, etc) 2- shot registry (like with CSS, i hate not my shots not counting where i put them) 3- customization (I'm addicted to this now, thx to CoD4) 4- Community (Usually with The_Few, so not much of a problem there, lol)

To a certain extent Bubbles thats true but that would be like saying that shooting a gun at a range is the same as doing it in battle. There's alot more at work than than just pointing and shooting or pointing and clicking. Especially as games get more detailed COD2 and COD4 are great examples of games that your doing the same thing in pointing and clicking but theres about 100% more things going on in COD4... Ambient lighting, Papers floating in the air, Airstrikes, Helicopters, Tons more noise, trip mines, flash grenades that stun the hell out of you... The list keeps going So yea we still point and click but theres a hell of alot more going on around you
